David Terranova http://www.davidterranova.com Creative Flash Developer EN FILM: REBELRAVE 5 http://www.rebelrave.tv/seth-troxler-in-paris/ Thu, 06 Nov 08 13:00:00
The most emotionally intense project I've ever worked on, wrapped in drama that would make Eastenders believable. The important thing however is that it's finished, and I am very proud of it! Visit my blog if you want to read more about this.

RebelRave has been an extremely influential project for me, starting just under a year ago and taking up most of my social and sleeping time and, as you can probably tell by looking at my latest entries in my portfolio below, it has taken priority over my usual Flash projects. Even though it may seem that Flash has taken a back seat in my geek-life, I am actually taking on a lot of Flash projects: just smaller ones that I don't need to showcase here.

Together with the release of this episode, I have built a portal for all the films: REBELRAVE.TV, which I launched today.

FILM: REBELRAVE 4 http://www.rebelrave.tv/warehouses-toilets/ Tue, 10 Jun 08 13:00:00
The fourth installment of my monthly film for the Crosstown Rebels.
This is a merge of two parties that I filmed, one in London and the other in Manchester, again following three world-class DJs: Pier Bucci, Jamie Jones and Hector.
I really enjoyed this one particularly. However once again I had to work on this outside most people's office hours. During the day I had been working doing my usual Flash stuff for new media agencies: then I'd go home and work on the film until the early hours of the morning, then wake up at 8:00 again!

I managed to get some really nice shots of Hector at his shop to introduce the episode, and he handled the task perfectly! I merged various shots of him into single scenes, giving the twin and triplet effect, which turned out just as I had imagined - to my surprise.. Having these new introduction scenes gives the film an extra boost of content that makes it feel a lot more like a proper show, rather than a solely music-based party video.

I spent more time on the sound: the music has a better flow and I've introduced some voice effects that I think will now be included in the template for future RebelRaves.

With the help of the amazing Martin Wollerstam we went back to producing some hot animations mixed with shots of my girlfriend being silly.

On the whole I'd say it's been a definite step up from the previous films! Really proud of it!!

FILM: REBELRAVE 3 http://www.rebelrave.tv/the-crosstown-rebels-residency-watergate-berlin/ Thu, 15 May 08 13:00:00
The third installation of RebelRave took place in Berlin, following the Crosstown Rebels' party at the Watergate.

This is one of the most respected clubs in Berlin that has accumulated an impressive list of world-class djs and producers. It's located right on the banks of the river Spree in Kreuzberg, split into two floors, with huge windows that look out onto the river. The second floor has an amazing light screen which stretches from the back wall onto the whole width of the ceiling, bringing the room to life with really nice LED animations.

So filming a place like this made it really easy to get good shots: I didn't have to rely on finding crazy people to make the film interesting! However, the club owners weren't too happy about me being there, and after a few discussions they agreed to let me film, but only from the dj booth and with no light, which is why there are so many infrared shots!

FILM: REBELRAVE 2 http://www.davidterranova.com/files/rebelrave/?p=2_goa Thu, 20 Mar 08 13:00:00
This film project has kept me very busy indeed. The main reason is that I've been working on it around my real Flash projects, meaning a lot of ridiculously long nights and no weekends. To give you an idea, I would be staying up so late that I was able to have msn conversations with Damian Lazarus who was just waking up in a hotel in Mexico.

As we speak I'm actually about to complete the REBELRAVE 3, but more about that in the next few days.
REBELRAVE 2 features Damian Lazarus playing at the Goa party, happening in the enormous Fabrik in Madrid. We were greeted by a crowd of 6000 crazy Spanish people, which frankly was the largest crowd of people I've seen inside a single room. Going from one end of the club to another would take me a good ten minutes, fighting against the flow of people, which always seems to be going against you - whatever direction you're going in!

Damian played on a stage which was backed by a mixture of performers and dancers, very dramatic! I attempted to interview some of the spanish people there, which failed miserably: I tried to ask some girls what they thought of Damian, yet apparently they understood "what are you doing later on?".

Back in London, editing the video (once again from my mobile office) even though extremely tough, was good fun. I had more pieces to camera than the first video, which drastically helps to give the film a structure. It even features an interview of Damian by a local radio station who were broadcasting a live show of the night.

Again, my good friend Martin Wollerstam drew a beautiful introduction in his usual special style.

MTV: Move your lips http://www.moveyourlips.com Sat, 15 Mar 08 13:00:00
Yet another MTV project came my way a couple of months ago, working together with Sam Gilbey.

The website is called Move Your Lips, and it focuses around the collaboration between MTV and Bodyshop to raise money for Staying Alive's project to raise awareness of AIDS worldwide.

The website runs in 10 different languages and it is driven by XML, giving the client total control over the content.

Since there was already a style guide in place set by the print campaign, we had to work hard to not steer too far away from it. Experimenting as we went along we managed to produce something that respected that style guide, yet having a slight touch of our own individual style.

Two months ago i moved to a new flat, which like you all know completely messes up your daily habits: having no internet connection meant that I had to relocate my home setup to a local café, which has its benefits: staff know you by name, you automatically receive a coffee in the morning without asking; but it also has some flaws, mostly financial.
Nonetheless the entirety of Move Your Lips was conceived from a variety of armchairs in a café, which is information that I think is worth sharing.

FILM: REBELRAVE 1 http://www.rebelrave.tv/nye-2008/ Fri, 15 Feb 08 13:00:00
The beginning of my 2008 started with a twist. Underground DJ Damian Lazarus got in touch with me as he was looking for someone to produce a monthly video to showcase the events of his label: The Crosstown Rebels.

Being a small fan of Damian and having always kept an eye open for Crosstown Rebel parties and events meant that I couldn't really believe my luck when this landed right on my lap. Within a couple of weeks' planning I was to follow 3 of the Rebel DJs around London on New Year's Eve: Matthew Styles, Jamie Jones and Dinky.
At that same time Damian was playing in Playa del Carmen (Mexico) and being followed by a second camera.

I've always had some sort of connection with film and production thanks to my brothers' production company Red Earth Studio. With the basic experience I had, mixed with some help from my brothers, I managed to produce this 7 minute video...

It's divided into four parts, one for each event. Each part is introduced by a short illustrated animation which was made by a good friend of mine, Martin Wollerstam. I've always wanted to work with him in one way or another, and this was my chance!

Anyway, go check it out!!!

The site aims to deliver basic tips to young people to help them realise that small actions can make a big change to the world's carbon emissions.

It features videos by Ogilvy, Lowe and Cake, amongst others, who produced 40 ads which will broadcast in 162 countries. Each ad encourages the viewer to visit the website.

PlayStation: This Is Living http://www.davidterranova.com/ Fri, 23 Mar 07 13:00:00
It's probably the longest and definitely the most intense project I've worked on so far: I have dedicated yet another 3 months of my life to another experiential website for PlayStation - this time promoting the launch of the PS3 with a campaign called This Is Living.

It runs closely alongside the TV ad campaign - so closely that unless you watch the adverts the website won't mean much to you at all. It brings you into Paradis3, a hotel where a bunch of eccentric characters are staying. You can visit each of their rooms to find out more about them. Each character has a short film that you can watch, so if you don't own a TV (like me) you should have a look at these to understand what the site is about.

Being part of the four-man team who built this has been another learning curve. Liam O'Donnell (Spikything.com), Jim Hall (Happylander.com) and Joe Rúfian (Head of development at LBi) have been inspiring to work with and I hope to come across them again in the near future.
